Learn ways to honor mothers on Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a time set aside to celebrate the women who have nurtured, guided, and loved us. For many, it's a joyful day of gratitude and celebration. For others, it's a tender day marked by grief, longing, or bittersweet memories. And for some, it's a mixture of all these emotions woven together.

Wherever you find yourself this Mother's Day, know that your feelings are real and valid. Mother's Day often brings to mind our biological mothers—but the truth is, many of us have been mothered by people who weren't necessarily related by blood. It might have been a stepmother, a grandmother, an aunt, a mentor, a family friend, or someone who simply showed up with love when we needed it the most. In my case, it was my sweet wonderful Aunt Helen. She was always there for myself and my siblings, and we were blessed to not only have our mom, but to also have her as well. She was a huge part of our lives and these bonds are just as sacred and worthy of honoring.

This year, I find myself reflecting on the many forms that "mothering" can take. It's about unconditional love, guidance, nurturing, and acceptance—and those gifts can come from many places in our lives.

If you are grieving this Mother's Day, whether from the loss of your mother, the absence of a mother figure, or a complicated relationship, know that you are not alone. Grief and love are two sides of the same coin. Feeling the ache of missing someone is also a reflection of the deep love you carry for them.

Here are a few gentle ways to honor Mother's Day, in whatever way feels right for you:

  • Light a candle in memory of a mother or maternal figure who touched your life.

  • Cook a favorite dish that reminds you of her.

  • Write a letter to her, sharing memories, gratitude, or even things left unsaid.

  • Take time for yourself, giving yourself permission to feel, remember, cry, laugh, or be still.

  • Celebrate someone special who has been a "mother" to you, in the truest sense of the word.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. There is no right or wrong way to move through a day like this. Whether you celebrate, mourn, reflect, or simply breathe through the day—you are honoring love.

This Mother's Day, may we remember that love is not limited to one form, one person, or one day. It lives in us, and through us.

Sending you gentle hugs, warm thoughts and all my love this Mother's Day.

Remember to take good care of YOU!
